Prince Harry: No Support After My Mum’s Death

Prince Harry has gotten candid about how his mother’s death affected him, but not without shading his family in the process.

On 31 August 1997, his mother Princess Diana of Wales tragically died in a car accident in Paris, France: Prince Harry was 12-years-old at the time.

In his Netflix docu-series, “Heart of Invictus”, which premiered on Wednesday, 30 August, the 38-year-old Duke of Sussex opened up on how her death, combined with his military tour of Afghanistan (and the post-traumatic stress disorder he developed as a result), severely impacted him.

“My tour of Afghanistan in 2012 flying Apaches … there was an unravelling and the trigger to me was actually returning from Afghanistan,” he explained on the show. “But the stuff that was coming up was from 1997 … losing my mum at such a young age, the trauma that I had I was never really aware of, it was never discussed.

“The biggest struggle for me is that no one around me could really help,” Prince Harry continued, seemingly taking jabs at the British Royal Family. “I didn’t have that support structure, that network, or that expert advice to identify what was actually going on with me.”

Luckily, he’s been concentrating on improving his mental health in the last few years, plus he’s got the support of his wife, Meghan Markle, and their two children.
